    Common FAQs

Calculating the right amount of gravel, limestone, MOT sub-base etc. can be difficult. To make sure you buy the correct amount of material for your application, we’ve answered some of your questions

How do you calculate how much gravel is needed?

All you need to know is the size of the area you wish to cover, what depth of material you require, and your postcode. The size information helps calculate how much material you will require and your postcode to work out delivery costs.

Note: Our calculator is only intended as a rough guide to help you estimate the volume of gravel, slate or other aggregates needed for your project. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

How much gravel do I need for my driveway?

Calculating an accurate estimate of how much gravel or aggregate you need for a driveway is simple with our gravel calculator. All you need to know is the desired length and width of the driveway, along with what gravel depth you need. You can get an estimate right now using the calculator above.

What depth of gravel do I need?

Usually, you would lay a 10mm aggregate at a depth of around 30mm. For heavy duty applications like a driveway or patio with heavy traffic, this would need to be at least 50mm.

A 20mm aggregate would need to be at least 40mm deep with driveways or heavy duty applications needing at least 60mm.

A larger aggregate will settle and bond together better than smaller ones. The depth you will need to select for your gravel or slate will always depend on the aggregate size and what the surface will be used for. If in doubt, give us a call.

What will happen if I don’t put enough gravel down or too much?

If you don’t have enough sub-base for your patio or driveway, or enough gravel for your walkway then over time, the top surface will begin to sink due to the traffic going over it. This is common with block paving and patios with soft soil underneath.

You can’t put too much down unless it’s an aggregate-only pathway or driveway. For aggregate-only applications, too much material can lead to a soft top surface as there’s too much material for it to bond together.

How much gravel do I need for my garden?

To calculate how much gravel you require for your garden, you must know the approximate area you are working with, and the desired depth. For gardens, this can be trickier as the shape may not be a simple square. We recommend extending this to make it a square, as it is better to order too many aggregates than too few.

Can you use the material calculator for all aggregates?

Yes. Our gravel calculator can be used for the gravel and aggregates we have listed on our website. For other materials not listed, you can gauge rough estimates if you know that the material you wish to order is similar in volume to ones listed.
